Data equity pledge

We are exploring future models that may allow participants to share in value generated from research using their data. AI lets us model biology, but it only works because of the data that our members contribute.

What we ask of members.

Onyx is a research collective advancing scientific understanding of autoimmune diseases. Members contribute by:

Sharing health data and medical records
Providing blood samples for analysis
Participating in surveys and interviews
Offering feedback on research findings

All contributions are voluntary and members are fairly compensated for their time and effort.

Requirements.

Who can join

Adults 18 years or older
Diagnosis by a rheumatologist of one or more autoimmune conditions (see list)
Additional eligibility criteria reviewed during screening

Research tests are not intended for medical diagnosis or treatment

Diagnosis by a rheumatologist of one or more of the following conditions, grouped by body system to help you find yours:

Joints & Muscles

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Skin

  • Psoriasis
  • Atopic dermatitis

Digestive

  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

Multi-system

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Systemic sclerosis
  • Mixed connective tissue disease
  • Sjögren's syndrome
  • Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies e.g. polymyositis
  • Vasculitides e.g. ANCA-associated vasculitis

Thyroid

  • Graves' disease

Nervous system

  • Multiple sclerosis

Common questions.

Members enrolled in a study receive cash compensation for providing biospecimens for scientific analysis, such as blood testing, as well as for participating in research interviews.

Samples are processed in our Berkeley lab for advanced laboratory testing and analysis. They are not sold to third parties. Member data is governed by strict privacy protocols.

No. We ship a collection kit to your home with a prepaid return label. Depending on protocol, a mobile phlebotomist may visit you at home, or we provide self-collection options.

We're developing a program so that members whose data contributes to research outcomes can share in the revenue generated. More details to come.

This autoimmune study covers a broad range of conditions. Onyx also runs dedicated studies for rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. If you have one of those conditions you may be eligible for both this study and the dedicated one — apply here and we'll route you appropriately.

Onyx is a research collective based in Berkeley, California. Our founders hold PhDs from UC Berkeley with backgrounds in computational biology and AI. The study is IRB-approved, meaning an independent ethics board oversees how the research is conducted and how participant data is handled.
